Movie Browser 0.1

Flash and Media Center are a sweet mix. I wish I used flash 2 years when I was breaking my head over hosted html. The picture above is from my newest application "Movie Browser". This runs on MCE 2005, Vista MCE and Extenders :P. It's still in beta and is a little difficult to set up, but worth it :-) I mean, who needs iTunes huh?

I am no flash expert, I got the design from the open source dudes at weberdesignlabs.com It took a couple days to get flash to play nice with MCE but I think it looks great.

If you are interested in the project post a comment and I'll continue development. It is currently running on my Vista and 2005 box without a hitch so any further development is not for me it's for you. This is an open source project, so if you improve the code let me know.

This is still in BETA, so unless your ready to do some post install maintenance please wait for the final release.

That looks beautiful. Where does it get the meta-data from?

Very nice. I'll give it a try this week

Very nice. Audio playback seems fine, but I am having a little difficulty getting video playback though. I'll keep you posted.

Nice work.

Installed on Vista Ult SP1 without a hitch. But, in the xml file it only references avis. Does this work for DVD folders?

I currently use My Movies but really like the gui of Movie Browser a lot better! If this thing is going to keep going, let me know where to send the money!

Anonymous said...

Very cool! You definitely should consider supporting the My Movies and/or TV Library metadata XML formats since good tools already exist for generating the metadata.

Wow, I love flash!. Looks great and would even be greater if it would work together with extreme movie manager! Keep up the work, please!

This looks very cool. Many thanks and please keep up the very good work.

I wrote a script to generate the Recent.xml file based on a collection of MyMovies.xml files. I've got everything working well except the video playback (kinda important :). When I click/hit enter nothing happens. What am I missing?

Treas0n said...

I'm going to release a new version supporting mymovies.xml soon.

John I am not sure what you are missing. Post a sample xml node. And if you want to, share the script and I'll integrate it.

Saying thanks to save a kitten!

My problem was that I had a slightly older version of Flash installed which caused the app to do nothing when the movie was clicked. I will post my MyMovies conversion program as soon I get a chance. I will say that the perf is not too good an xbox360 extender :(

Anonymous said...

HI I have managed to get this set up but once I click to play the movie I get the following

"Video Error"
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. please restart media center or the computer.

When I try play the movie outside of this app it works fine. Any ideas?

Check the fpath format...make sure it's like the following:

file://C:/Whatever/MovieName/Movie1.avi

Anonymous said...

Hmm something amazing about the happen. For version 0.1 it works well. All things need to said is already said: myMovies integration and needs to improve scroll performance (but I think thats depended on flash)

I hope you will keep this work up. Thanks for the effort.

Anonymous said...

Ok, here's my utility to allow integration with the My Movies format. You just point it at the root directory of your movies collection and specify the output file (C:\Windows\ehome\MovieBrowser\Recent.xml for example).

Enjoy!
John

Hi,

This is a great plugin. Keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

Oh,

And thank you treas0n & john for both the plugin and the converter.

By the way, I don't know if you guys ever heard ox XBMC, but it gets its movie info from IMDB so it would be a nice idea to have your plugin do the same instead of using MyMovies plugin data. But I don't know which way would be easier.

Anyway, XBMC is open source so the code is available to look at Sourceforge.

I hope this helps.

Thanks again

Have tried installing on Vista.

For some reason, Media Center won't fire up once this is installed - it says "Media Center has Stopped Working". I Uninstall and all comes to life again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The app looks great, Treas0n.

Too Cool! Will try today. Can't wait for the mymovies integration. You are appreciated.

Awesome looking plugin. If you can integrate it with MyMovies or use its metadata it will be very useful indeed. Have you considered collaborating with Brian?

How do I play a ripped DVD through this plugin? It only references an AVI file.

Anonymous said...

Probably depends on whether the plugin is running on an extender or not. If it is, recent.xml can point to the .wvx playlist referenced in this solution.

I love this plugin so much! It worked fine for me on Vista SP1, i'm looking for a way to script the movie information from imdb.com now. Great Work TreasOn

HI Currently using this plugin and it working well, only issue is updating the the xml files, Are you still developing this plugin to include auto updating of the xml files?

Hello!!
I test your plugin last hour and i think you do a nice work!!!
your plugin is very pleasant!
So i look your source code but i can't open iTunesAlbumArt.fla with macromedia flash 8.

Dead project?

The GUI looks great. However I am a bit a computer noob. I managed to change your recent.xml script so it uses my DVD. However I won't play them (I directed it to a DVD File Video_TS.IFO). Does it at all work with DVD-format-files? And if yes, what do I need to do? I appreciate your help! Again, the GUI of this application is absolutely great. I hope you keep working on this and maybe make it noob-proof :-). Many Thanks!

Hi!
Movie browser is real neat, thx.

Made a tool to convert from salami's movie manager format to movie browser.
Not tested very much, yet. So if you try it pls give feedback.

Also, it only supports single file media. Is there a way to add movies with more than 1 file?

Added a backup location:

Anonymous said...

For multiple files, you can use the playlist to make it work.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but I believe you would have to add two (or more) files to movie browser and have multiple pictures as well?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the beautiful interface/program! - but I get this message under Vista-64: "Program not responding. The ODS MediaCore program has stopped responding...."
Wish I could contribute more..

Anonymous said...

Love the interface, this is the way to go on media center.

I was getting ready to work it over to make it compatible with mymovies and collectorz. But the FLA file is not there. Is the fla available? can't do anything major without that file.

This is great !! Thanks a lot, its just what I wanted to have for my Entertainment system,
Just 1 Question... is there a way for the PC to launch Vista Media Center directly into Movie Browser??
I don't use any of the rest of Vista MCE and just want my entertainment system to launch Movie Browser when it launches. Is there any way?

Anonymous said...

I like the look of it too, and I am hoping it will work for what I want right now. :) Awesome job!

I love the interface of the browser, but I seem to be having a problem... I linked 20 movies, but only 15 appear on the main page. It always says "...out of 15" at the bottom right - even when I change the MoviesPerPage...

Great piece of article. It explains so much about the topic. I should say it is a detailed article. Talks about a variety of things - something which I never thought could exist. What I found different in your article is the way you have gone about to explain the topic in a simplistic way.
